Who is Luna Lovegood?

Luna Lovegood is a Ravenclaw student one year below Harry. She first appears in Order of the Phoenix, sitting in the same train compartment as Harry, Ginny and Neville, reading The Quibbler upside down and wearing a necklace of Butterbeer corks.

Her father, Xenophilius, edits The Quibbler, a magazine known for conspiracy theories and stories about creatures nobody else believes exist. Her mother was a witch who liked to experiment with spells; one went wrong when Luna was nine, and Luna watched her die.

Why Luna was sorted into Ravenclaw

Luna shows a side of Ravenclaw that has nothing to do with exam results. Ravenclaw values originality, open-mindedness and independent thought, and Luna has all three in extreme form. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her, she’s open to ideas others laugh at, and she sees things others miss.

Her intelligence is unusual rather than academic. She’s often wrong about facts, but frequently right about people. Read the Ravenclaw guide.

Personality and traits

Luna is calm, honest and unflappable. She says exactly what she thinks, often in a dreamy, sing-song voice, and is mostly unbothered by teasing. She’s also deeply kind and has a rare ability to say the right thing to someone who’s grieving.

She’s lonely for much of her school life. Other Ravenclaws hide her belongings and mock her. But she meets this with a quiet resilience that many readers find inspiring.

Luna in the books vs the films

Evanna Lynch, a fan of the books, won the role in an open casting call and played Luna from Order of the Phoenix onwards. Her performance is widely praised as one of the closest to the books. Lynch also made some of Luna’s jewellery herself, including the radish earrings.

The films cut some of Luna’s best scenes, including her Quidditch commentary and much of her time in the DA, but keep her conversation with Harry about loss.

Why Luna matters to the story

Luna shows that being different isn’t the same as being wrong. In a series full of people trying to fit in, she’s the one character who never tries. She’s also one of the few people who can talk to Harry about grief honestly, because she’s lived it.

Debates and fan questions

Is Luna right about her creatures?

Mostly not, as far as the books show. Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Nargles never appear. But she’s right about several things nobody else believes, including Thestrals and the voices behind the veil. The books seem to say that being open-minded is worth the occasional mistake.

Why is Luna so calm about grief?

She lost her mother young and has had time to come to terms with it. She also believes she’ll see her mother again. That calm helps Harry more than anyone’s sympathy after Sirius dies.

Should Luna have been in Hufflepuff?

Some fans argue her kindness and loyalty fit Hufflepuff. But her defining trait is independent thinking, which is pure Ravenclaw.

Fun facts

  • Her room at home has a painted ceiling showing five friends, linked with the word “friends” over and over: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville.
  • She wears radish earrings and a Butterbeer-cork necklace.
  • She roars from a lion hat at Quidditch matches to support Gryffindor.
  • Her name means “moon” in Latin, fitting for a dreamy character.
  • She tells Harry she believes she’ll see her mother again, because of the voices she heard behind the veil in the Department of Mysteries.
