How to run a Sorting at a party or in class

  1. Print one question sheet per person and keep the answer key back, so nobody can work out which answer leads to which house.
  2. Set the scene. Dim the lights, use a pointed hat or a bowl if you have one, and read the questions aloud for younger children.
  3. Answer on instinct. Remind everyone there are no wrong answers. The quiz works best when people don’t try to aim for a house.
  4. Reveal the houses one at a time. Use the answer key to count the ticks, then announce each result. A cheer from each house table is traditional.
  5. Group by house for games, a quiz-night team or a House Cup with points for good behaviour.

Ideas for teachers

  • Reading week or World Book Day: sort the class, then have each house present its founder and values.
  • House points: run a term-long House Cup. Our guide to how the House Cup works explains the rules from the books.
  • Writing prompt: “Why the Sorting Hat put me in my house”, using the house traits guide.
  • Discussion: is it better to be brave, clever, kind or ambitious? Our best house debate gives each side.

Prefer it online?

The same questions work out the result for you in the online house quiz and the kids’ house quiz. Then try the Patronus quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Is the printable house quiz free?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for home, parties or the classroom. Please don’t sell it or republish it as your own.

How do I print it?

Choose a version, then press the Print button, or download the ready-made PDF. Each version fits on a few A4 or US Letter pages, with the answer key and score card on a separate page so you can keep it back.

How is the house worked out?

Each question has four answers, and each answer belongs to one house. Use the answer key to tally which house each answer points to. The house with the most ticks wins. If two houses tie, the person picks between them, just as Harry did.

Which version should I use for children?

The kids’ version has 10 shorter questions in simple language, written for roughly ages 7 to 12. Older children and teenagers usually prefer the full 12-question version.

Is there an online version?

Yes. The same questions are online as the main house quiz and the kids’ house quiz, which work out the result automatically.

Is this the official Sorting Hat quiz?

No. It’s an independent fan-made quiz with original questions, not connected to Warner Bros., J.K. Rowling or the official Wizarding World site.

Unofficial fan project. Not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Warner Bros., J.K. Rowling or Wizarding World Digital.
