How does the Sorting work?

At Hogwarts, every new student puts on the Sorting Hat on their very first night. The Hat looks inside their head, sees what they’re like and what matters to them, and calls out the house where they’ll live and learn for the next seven years. Your house is like your family at school: you sleep in the same tower, eat at the same table and win points together for the House Cup.

This quiz works the same way. Each question has four answers, one for each house. Whichever house you pick most often is your house.

Fun ideas for parents and teachers

  • Sorting party: print the paper version, read the questions aloud and reveal everyone’s house together.
  • House Cup at home: give points for kindness, tidying up or reading, and see which house wins at the end of the month.
  • Draw your crest: after the quiz, ask children to design their own house crest using the house animal and colours.
  • Next quiz: older children might enjoy the Patronus quiz or the full house quiz.

Questions from grown-ups

What age is this quiz for?

It’s written for children aged about 7 to 12, with short questions and simple words. Younger children can do it with a grown-up reading the questions aloud.

Is the kids’ house quiz safe and free?

Yes. It’s free, there’s no sign-up, and children don’t type in any names or personal details. Answers stay in the browser and aren’t saved.

Can every child get any house?

Yes. Each question has one answer for each house, and the answers appear in a different order each time, so nobody can guess which one leads where.

Is there a version on paper?

Yes. The printable house quiz has a kids’ version with an answer key and score card, ideal for parties and classrooms.

What if my child doesn’t like their house?

Every house has heroes. Read the house description together, and remember that in the books the Sorting Hat listens to what you want too. They can take it again any time.
