Who is Bellatrix Lestrange?
Bellatrix Lestrange is the most fanatical of Voldemort’s Death Eaters. Born Bellatrix Black, she’s the eldest of three sisters: Andromeda, who married a Muggle-born, and Narcissa, who married Lucius Malfoy. She married Rodolphus Lestrange, a fellow Death Eater.
She’s introduced in Goblet of Fire through Harry’s view of a memory in the Pensieve, being sentenced to Azkaban, and appears in person after the mass breakout in Order of the Phoenix.
Why Bellatrix was sorted into Slytherin
Bellatrix comes from one of the oldest pure-blood families in Britain, and the Blacks were almost all Slytherins. She shares the house’s pride in bloodline and its fierce loyalty to its own circle, pushed to fanatical extremes. Her loyalty to Voldemort is total, and she treats any failure or betrayal as unforgivable.
She shows Slytherin at its very worst: ambition and loyalty in the service of cruelty. Read the Slytherin guide.
Personality and traits
Bellatrix is cruel, unstable and gleeful in violence. She takes pleasure in torture, taunts her victims and laughs as she fights. Years in Azkaban have left her gaunt and wild, but her devotion to Voldemort is undimmed. She’s also contemptuous of those she sees as weak, including her own sister’s family when they waver.

Strengths and flaws
Strengths: formidable magical skill, total commitment and fearlessness.
Flaws: cruelty, fanaticism, instability and contempt for anyone outside her narrow idea of worthiness. Her arrogance in battle is what lets Molly Weasley beat her.
Bellatrix in the books vs the films
Helena Bonham Carter played Bellatrix from Order of the Phoenix onwards, and her performance made the character iconic. The films change some events: in Half-Blood Prince, Bellatrix burns down the Burrow, which doesn’t happen in the books. The film of Deathly Hallows – Part 1 also adds a moment where she carves a slur into Hermione’s arm, which isn’t in the book.
Why Bellatrix matters to the story
Bellatrix shows where Voldemort’s ideology leads when someone believes it completely. She’s also the source of personal grief for several heroes: Neville’s parents, Harry’s godfather and Tonks. Her defeat by Molly Weasley, a mother protecting her daughter, is a deliberate contrast with Bellatrix’s cold version of family loyalty.
Fun facts
- Her name comes from the star Bellatrix in the constellation Orion, following the Black family tradition of naming children after stars and constellations.
- Her wand was taken at Malfoy Manor and used by Hermione to impersonate her.
- She’s one of very few people Voldemort seems to trust, though not enough to tell her what she guarded.
Debates and fan questions
Did Bellatrix love Voldemort?
Many readers think so. She speaks to him with a devotion that goes beyond loyalty, and she’s desperate for his approval. Later stories even give her a child with him. Whatever the nature of her feelings, Voldemort never returns them. He values her as a weapon, not a person.
Why did Molly Weasley beat her?
Bellatrix was one of the most dangerous duellists alive, but she underestimated Molly, mocking her as she fought. Molly was fighting to protect her daughter after nearly losing her to a Killing Curse, and after losing her son Fred earlier that night. The books suggest that fury and love beat arrogance.
Was Azkaban the reason for her madness?
Azkaban made her worse, as it does everyone, but she was already capable of torturing the Longbottoms into insanity before she was imprisoned. Her cruelty came first.
