Who is Draco Malfoy?
Draco Malfoy is Harry’s rival from their first meeting in Madam Malkin’s robe shop. He’s the only son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, one of the wealthiest and most prejudiced pure-blood families in Britain. His father is a Death Eater who escaped prison after Voldemort’s first fall by claiming he’d been under the Imperius Curse.
Draco grows up spoiled and taught to look down on Muggle-borns and “blood traitors”. When he offers Harry his friendship on their first day and Harry refuses, a seven-year rivalry begins.
Why Draco was sorted into Slytherin
Draco was barely under the Sorting Hat before it shouted Slytherin. He has the house’s ambition and pride, his family has been in Slytherin for generations, and he openly shares its old blood-purity prejudice.
But Draco also shows the house’s instinct for self-preservation, and how that can be both a weakness and a quiet saving grace. Read the Slytherin guide.
Personality and traits
For most of the series, Draco is a snob and a bully. He mocks the Weasleys’ poverty, calls Hermione a slur, and runs to his father whenever things go wrong. He’s often more bluster than threat.
In Half-Blood Prince, a different Draco appears: frightened, isolated and buckling under an impossible task. He loses weight, skips Quidditch and cries alone in a bathroom. He’s discovering that the cause he grew up admiring involves real murder.

Strengths and flaws
Strengths: ambition, resourcefulness, skill at Quidditch and, ultimately, a refusal to kill.
Flaws: arrogance, prejudice, cowardice and a habit of hiding behind his father’s name.
Draco in the books vs the films
Tom Felton played Draco in all eight films and became one of the most popular cast members with fans. The films give Draco more sympathetic moments, especially in Half-Blood Prince. In the film of Deathly Hallows, Draco hesitates after Voldemort calls him over at the end, and walks to his parents; in the book, the Malfoys simply sit together in the Great Hall, not quite belonging to either side.
Why Draco matters to the story
Draco is Harry’s dark mirror: a boy his age, also with a famous family name, raised to believe very different things. His story shows that prejudice is learned, and that the line between bully and murderer is one many people can’t cross when it comes to it.
Fun facts
- Draco is Latin for “dragon”, and also the name of a constellation, a Black family tradition.
- He was turned into a bouncing ferret by Barty Crouch Jr disguised as Mad-Eye Moody.
- His wand changed allegiance to Harry when Harry took it at Malfoy Manor, which is why the Elder Wand obeyed Harry.
- His son, Scorpius, becomes best friends with Harry’s son Albus in later stories.
