Who is Minerva McGonagall?

Professor Minerva McGonagall teaches Transfiguration at Hogwarts. She’s Head of Gryffindor House, Deputy Headmistress under Dumbledore and one of the most accomplished witches of her age. She’s also the first teacher Harry ever meets at Hogwarts, waiting at the top of the stairs to lead the first-years into the Great Hall.

She was born in Scotland to a witch mother and a Muggle minister father. She’s strict, fair and fiercely protective of her students.

Why McGonagall was sorted into Gryffindor

McGonagall was a hatstall. The Sorting Hat spent around five and a half minutes deciding between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Her intellect is obvious. But so is her courage. She duels Snape, takes four Stunning Spells defending Hagrid and leads the defence of the castle. She chose Gryffindor, and the Hat agreed.

Personality and traits

McGonagall is stern, disciplined and impossible to fool. She has little patience for laziness or rule-breaking. But beneath the strictness she has a warm heart and a dry wit, and she cares deeply about her students. Her occasional bursts of emotion, like her fury at Umbridge or her joy at Gryffindor Quidditch wins, are among the series’ best moments.

Strengths: brilliance, courage, fairness and loyalty.

Flaws: strictness that can feel cold, and a fierce competitive streak where Gryffindor is concerned.

McGonagall in the books vs the films

Dame Maggie Smith played McGonagall in all eight films. The films cut or shorten several of her best book moments, including her full duel with Snape. Smith’s performance, especially her delight at the statues coming to life, made her a fan favourite.

Why McGonagall matters to the story

McGonagall is the steady centre of Hogwarts. She’s the teacher students fear and trust in equal measure, and she embodies Gryffindor at its most mature: courage guided by principle and experience. In the final battle she’s the one who turns the school into a fortress.

Debates and fan questions

Should McGonagall have gone to Ravenclaw?

She’s one of the most brilliant witches of her generation, and the Hat seriously considered it. But her courage is just as striking. She chose Gryffindor, and her conduct in the final battle suggests she chose well.

Was she ever married?

J.K. Rowling has written that McGonagall married Elphinstone Urquart, a former boss at the Ministry, years after turning down an earlier proposal. He died a few years later.

Did McGonagall know about Snape?

Not until the very end. She believed Snape had murdered Dumbledore and fought him to drive him from the school. Only after the battle did Harry reveal the truth.
