Who is Hermione Granger?

Hermione Granger is one of the three central characters in the series, alongside Harry and Ron. She’s a Muggle-born witch whose parents are both dentists. She had no idea magic existed until her Hogwarts letter arrived, and she responded the way she responds to everything: by reading every book she could find.

By the time she boards the Hogwarts Express, she’s memorised her textbooks and can already cast several spells. She’s often insufferable in her first term, but after Harry and Ron save her from a troll on Halloween, the three become inseparable.

Why Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor

Hermione is the best-known near-hatstall in the series. The Sorting Hat seriously considered Ravenclaw, and it’s easy to see why: she’s one of the most gifted students Hogwarts has seen.

But the Hat put her in Gryffindor, because for Hermione, knowledge is never the end goal. She uses it to protect people and stand up for what’s right. When it matters, she breaks rules, faces danger and defies authority, which is pure Gryffindor. For more on the overlap, read Ravenclaw vs Slytherin and house traits explained.

Personality and traits

Hermione is brilliant, hard-working and organised. She plans ahead, does her homework early and has an answer for almost everything. She’s also principled to the point of stubbornness, and she can be bossy with friends who don’t share her standards.

What makes her a Gryffindor is her moral courage. She stands up to teachers, bullies and the Ministry itself. She campaigns for house-elves when nobody else cares, and she makes enormous personal sacrifices for the people she loves.

Strengths and flaws

Strengths: intelligence, preparation, loyalty, moral courage and a deep sense of justice.

Flaws: she can be bossy, judgemental and too sure she’s right. She’s also afraid of failure: her boggart is Professor McGonagall telling her she failed everything.

Fun facts

  • Her boggart is McGonagall announcing she’s failed all her exams.
  • She slaps Draco Malfoy across the face in her third year. The film version turns it into a punch.
  • She’s the only one of the trio who went back to Hogwarts to finish her final year.
  • Her middle name is Jean.
  • She later became Minister for Magic.

Hermione in the books vs the films

Emma Watson played Hermione in all eight films. The films change her more than most characters:

  • Her flaws. The book Hermione is bossy, sometimes wrong and occasionally mean, as with the jinxed DA list that marks Marietta Edgecombe’s face. The films tend to give her Ron’s best lines and smooth over her rough edges.
  • Her appearance. The books describe bushy hair and large front teeth, which she later has shrunk. The films largely drop these details.
  • S.P.E.W. Her campaign for house-elf rights, a major thread in the books, is cut from the films.

Why Hermione matters to the story

Hermione is proof that being Muggle-born is no barrier to brilliance, in a war fought over blood purity. She’s also the series’ moral engine: the person who insists that house-elves, werewolves and Muggle-borns deserve the same rights as anyone else. Without her research and planning, Harry would not have survived his first year, let alone the Horcrux hunt.
